Make the Dreams of DC Public School 5th Graders a Reality

Our Challenge and How You Can Help

Since 2015, the Maury 5th grade class has worked together to raise money to attend Space Camp —an incredible capstone experience tradition! It is a three-day trip to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, at the end of the school year where students learn about STEM and space mission history, do space simulations, and even complete a realistic space mission.

While an incredible learning and community-building experience, Space Camp is also expensive — in the ballpark of $1,000 per student and not funded or supplemented by the PTA. As such, 5th grade families are asked to make a several hundred dollar contribution for their student and then charged with fundraising to make up the difference in the total cost of the trip (almost $35,000 this year). It is important to note, that these fundraising efforts ensure that every 5th grade student has the opportunity to attend Space Camp regardless of family ability to pay the suggested contribution.

As such, 5th grade parents and students, as they have in years past, are planning a slate of fun fundraising events for the Maury community, including the Fall Festival and Used Book Sale. If you would like to support Space Camp fundraising in other ways, we welcome your help as an event volunteer or as a contributor of in-kind donations for supplies (such as food for the Old-Skool vs. New-Skool basketball games, or items that could be sold during our holiday sale, etc.). Please contact brookejamison@gmail.com to volunteer or donate supplies for an event.

Help contribute to our students’ efforts by making a tax-deductible donation to this year’s Launch Our Futures campaign!

Many thanks from the Maury 5th graders!
